L’inverno è trascorso mite e poco piovoso. A fine marzo si è avuto un periodo di circa 15 giorni di freddo, che hanno rallentato e riportato in linea rispetto alla media annuale la fase fenologica del germogliamento. Le abbondanti piogge primaverili, concentrate soprattutto nel mese di maggio, hanno garantito una importante riserva idrica per i suoli, fondamentale per fronteggiare le difficoltà dovute alle scarse precipitazioni dei successivi mesi di giugno e luglio. Le temperature particolarmente basse rispetto alla media di questo periodo, hanno contenuto la crescita vegetativa, impedendo anche lo sviluppo di fitopatie.
La fioritura è iniziata con circa 10/15 giorni di ritardo e l’allegagione è stata piuttosto irregolare, determinando numerosi fenomeni di acinellatura. I mesi di giugno e luglio sono decorsi con assenza di precipitazioni e giornate soleggiate e calde. Alla fine di luglio alcune zone sono state interessate da una perturbazione atlantica, che ha portato un abbassamento delle temperature e abbondanti precipitazioni. In generale la gestione delle vigne non ha evidenziato particolari problemi, ed al momento ci sono tutti i presupposti per una vendemmia di qualità. Nella seconda metà di agosto il clima è decorso con sole e temperature piuttosto alte, con qualche temporale che ha contribuito a ottimizzare gli equilibri idrici e termici nel vigneto, esaltando le escursioni termiche tra giorno e notte. Attualmente (primi giorni di
settembre) le condizioni in vigna, salvo limitate eccezioni, fanno ben sperare per la qualità, mentre dal punto di vista quantitativo si stima un decremento complessivo in tutta la regione, rispetto allo scorso anno, compreso tra il 5 il 10% con evidenti variazioni da zona a zona a causa dell’eterogeneità che si registra nei territori della viticoltura campana.
Da sottolineare che un’importante zona produttiva della provincia di Benevento ritorna quest’anno in piena produzione, dopo che nei precedenti due anni la stessa era stata completamente compromessa a causa delle gelate e grandinate.
I tempi di raccolta fanno riscontrare attualmente una settimana di ritardo. Si inizierà con le uve per le basi spumante e i vitigni a bacca bianca nel Cilento nella prima decade di settembre. Nell’Agro aversano, nella seconda decade di settembre, sarà la volta delle uve di Asprinio e del Fiano nel Cilento. Successivamente, nel Beneventano, si proseguirà con la Falanghina, per continuare nell’Avellinese, nella prima decade di ottobre, con il Fiano di Avellino e il Greco di Tufo. Nei
Campi Flegrei la raccolta del Piedirosso è prevista nella prima decade di ottobre. L’ultima varietà ad essere vendemmiata sarà quella di Aglianico per la produzione della Docg Taurasi, nell’Avellinese, tra la fine di ottobre e la prima settimana di novembre.
Quantity: +18% compared to 2017 grape harvest
In spring the germination started optimally, slightly later than the previous year. The antiparasitic treatments, especially against virulent atorotum blister attacks, have been accompanied by continuous and frequent rainfall throughout the month of May, making the management and timeliness of interventions complex. At the beginning and at the end of the same month there were two violent hailstorms that affected the Sannio area and different areas of the region respectively. In June the rains gave a little break, favoring a regular flowering in a fairly short time. The fruit set has constituted an abundant production compared to 2017. The constant heat and the absence of rain in the last decade of July have then favored a recovery of the phenological phases of the vine. To go further also the month of August was marked by some brief afternoon thunderstorms, however maintaining the torrid temperatures of the previous phase. Therefore, overall, the development of the vegetation was very fast, continuous and vigorous, with a postponement of the ripening phase of about 78 days compared to last year.
The months of September and October, eventhough they were marked by some brief storms, gave warm sunny days, which allowed a slow and gradual maturation of the grapes, bringing back the harvest times in the classical periods. For the white varieties the first results of fermentation show a good quality level, with some excellent points. The aromatic profiles are very interesting and the gustatory profiles rather slender, with lively freshness.
The harvest of red grapes has been characterized by a great deal of heterogeneity, which required careful selection and the first analytical evidence shows less concentrated, fresher wines with good olfactory intensity. From the quantitative point of view, 2018 turned out to be a very special vintage: on the one hand, there were significant production losses due to various meteorological events and plant diseases, especially in an area of the province of Benevento, which represents the productive heart of the region; on the other hand, surprisingly increases were found compared to the average in the rest of the regional territory. Overall an total production is estimated of approximately 18% higher than last year.

The beginning of the year was characterized by very low temperatures, which lowered the thermal average of the period by some degrees, and by the presence of snow in the higher hills, which contributed to restore the water reserves of the soil. The months of February and March, on the other hand, were marked by mild temperatures; just as spring has passed with a rainy climate and temperatures above the average of the period, determining the conditions for an early ripening. A further instability of the weather conditions from the first ten days of April, has produced a significant temperature drop. These atmospheric dynamics have
determined a more heterogeneous development germination. In the days between 19th and 22nd April, night frosts have affected the first vegetative stages of the vine in the low areas, such as valleys and and more humid areas, causing considerable problems for the young buds. Since the end of April, the return of high pressure has led to a stable phase of good weather with a significant rise of temperature and low rainfalls, which have made it possible to partially recover from frost damage. The flowering and setting phases took place in favorable conditions, and were carried out on a regular basis and in a fairly short time. Afterwards, the constant heat and the absence of rains characterized the whole summer, with temperatures above the average of the period and a consequent greater evapotranspiration of the vegetation, determining a condition of greater stress for the plants. From a plant health point of view, the dry climate has contributed to the good health of the plants. At the end of July, the thousandth 2017 was presented as the drier year of the last 15 years, with an average temperature, between late May and late July, among the highest recorded. These climatic conditions continued throughout the summer and the period in which the grapes were harvested. In general, there was a strong slow down of the vegetative activity, with an anticipation of the hot season and the ripening phase of about 10-15 days, which then continued until the harvest. Overall the harvest took place with great serenity and the temperature ranges recorded since the beginning of September, made an important contribution to the qualitative result. The grapes were very ripe and perfectly intact, very rich in extractive substances, with sugary degrees higher than usual and lower acidity levels.
SAMNIUM FALANGHINA 2017 WINE QUOTE 2017
On 12 July 2018, Assoenologi Campania, appointed by Sannio Consorzio Tutela Vini, held a tasting aimed at evaluating white wines for D.O.C. Falanghina del Sannio of the 2017 grape harvest. The tasting was carried out by 10 professional winemakers, experts in this type of wine, with the knowledge of the area, and the wine evaluations were made according to the Union InternationaleDesOenologues method on previously anonymised samples. This method provides that for values equal to 100, wines are to be considered excellent; for values equal to 86 the wines are to be considered excellent; for values of 72 they are to be considered good. Intermediate values are intermediate judgments among those described. The results obtained were processed from the average of the scores assigned by the individual tasters, eliminating the lowest value and the highest value. The overall average score achieved was 88/100, thus attesting the overall qualitative judgment above the optimum. The evaluations of the samples tasted have brought out distinctive traits in the wines of this thousandth, recognizable in their greater softness, concentration, body and structure. The aromatic and gustatory persistence is also remarkable. The olfactory profiles are rich in floral and fruity sensations with complex mineral nuances. The average values attested between good and excellent, underline these prerogatives, in perfect coherence with the characteristics of the 2017 grape harvest in the varietal expression of the Falanghina del Sannio.

The beginning of the year 2016 was characterized by a very mild and dry winter, with temperatures on average higher than the long-term seasonal average. Only from mid-February to the end of March temperatures and rainfall were lowered. Even the beginning of spring was mild, leading to an anticipation of ripening of about 10 days. To go further the climatic trend of the area presented periods of discontinuity, characterized by sudden drops in temperature and frequent rainfalls, thus recovering the advance on vegetation.
On the night between 25 and 26 April there was a frost that damaged some of the Sannio vineyards. From the second decade of May and throughout June, the occurrence of heavy rains has led to an increase in the pressure of downy mildew which has made the management of vineyards more difficult and demanding. The flowering took place between the end of May and the beginning of June, as other years, but it had a fairly irregular course, with a more prolonged setting that produced more sparse bunches. Summer passed with good ventilation, temperatures that were not excessive, interrupted by frequent summer storms, and important temperature changes between day and night. Therefore in the vineyards there has been an excellent development of vegetation with good vigorous conditions. The ripening took place with regularity and the maturation of the grapes was very slow, with important development of aromatic precursors. The rains that fell in the first half of September determined a marked heterogeneity in the final phase of grape ripening, moving the beginning of the harvest a few days ahead. Due to the frequent summer rains it was not an easy year for the viticulture of Samnium area, but thanks to the rather cool temperatures, there was a very interesting harvest for the white berry varieties. Slender, fresh wines, supported by high acidity and with intense and elegant olfactory profiles.

2016 On the 22 June 2017, Assoenologi Campania, appointed from Sannio Consorzio Tutela Vini, carried out a tasting aimed at evaluating white wines such as D.O.C. Falanghina del Sannio from the 2016 grape harvest. The tasting was carried out by 13 oenologists, experts in this type of wine, with knowledge of the area, and the wine evaluations were made according to the Union InternationaleDesOenologues method on previously anonymized samples. This method provides that for values equal to 100, wines are to be considered excellent; for values equal to 86 the wines are to be considered excellent; for values of 72 they are to be considered good. Intermediate values are intermediate judgments among those described. The obtained results were processed from the average of the scores assigned by the individual tasters, eliminating the lowest value and the highest value. The overall average score achieved was 85/100, thus attesting the overall qualitative judgment at the optimum threshold. All the evaluations of the samples tasted have reported judgements remarking floral and fruity notes in the olfactory profile, freshness, flavor and agility in the gustatory profile, in perfect coherence with the characteristics of the 2016 in the varietal expression of Falanghina del Sannio.
